I've had many moms in my practice pump for one or even 2 years without 
any breast discomfort or damage. Something is wrong if this mom is 
having pain and discoloration. Check flanges size, suction/vacuum 
settings and use a vacuum gauge to make sure the pump is functioning 
properly. If it is, have her change pumps or even brands to try to find 
a better "fit". I almost always observe the mother pumping during a 
consult, especially if mom has a special needs baby and will likely be 
pumping long term.
