Dear Friends:

Well, better 22 years late than never. We had a lovely time in Boston. And I
couldn't stop being a lactation consultant, even during a lovely 3 days
together.

The first mention of breastfeeding I enjoyed was indirect and noticed while I
was enjoying a leisurely brunch (with way too much wonderful food) and the
Sunday paper. The Boston Globe featured an article aboout Nelly Furtado and the
change in her style of singing. "She...started recording the (new) album a
month after she weaned her daughter, Nevis, now 3 and traveling with her mom."
Isn't it sweet that this passage was mentioned in connection with a creative
product that also includes her baby?

DH and I spent a fascinating time at the Aquarium; a docent noticed us at an
exhibit and came over to talk about the topic of the exhibit, which was about
light pollution and how it deranges animals. I am fairly knowledgeable about
environmental issues and mentioned to him that I work in an environmentally
protective activity as a lactation consultant. He told me that the policy at the
Aquarium is to tell openly breastfeeding mothers that there are two special
rooms for them to use; he then said that he doesn't do it, because his own
daughter was an avid breastfeeder and it doesn't bother him. I suggested that he
could, if he felt like it, do something even more supportive. He could walk
near the mother he sees breastfeeding and say "Good for you!" and keep moving.

He thought that a woman nursing in public would have enough confidence not to
need such a comment.. I demurred, and said "every mother would enjoy such a
boost from a positive stranger."

The Boston I saw this weekend was beautiful, full of friendly and helpful
people. And the Red Sox won!!

warmly,
