Question to the group:

We have a spanish-speaking mom admitted for third episode of mastitis
in her right breast over 3 months. Baby is 4 months old. Via translator,
mother has taken dicloxicillan for four weeks, and states she took all
of the meds. She is unable to empty this breast with the Lactina, and
states that during the other episodes she was also unable to fully empty
the breast, probably leading to repeat infection.

The infected breast wil receive an ultrasound to rule out abcess or
tumor. I noticed that the nipple on the infected side is completely
inverted and does not pull out with the pump. Mother states it has been
like this since baby was about 2 weeks old.

The dr has ordered that we stop lactation, and to bind the breasts and
apply heat. Mother also states that she just wants to stop
breastfeeding, as she is very tired of these repeat infections.

Any suggestions here on the best way to stop lactation during severe
mastitis would be extremely appreciated!!

Brenda Phipps, BS, IBCLC
