With all the recent discussion regarding the inferiority of formula,
I thought I'd share with the list a call from a breastfeeding mother that I
had just a few minutes ago. She said that four days ago the baby began
pushing away after nursing a few minutes and fussing. She called her doctor
and was seen by the nurse practitioner and was told not to worry that babies
often decide to wean themselves on their own at all ages. (This baby is 2
mo old, born 8lbs. 2oz and now weighs 12lbs 5oz.)She was also told to go
home and try to relax and give the baby formula if that's what he seems to
want when he pushes her away...(Good thing this mom couldn't see the awful
faces I was making or the not so nice words I was saying to myself over this
advice...)Well anyway to make a long story short, she did go home and
formula fed as suggested when baby fussed at the breast and then just went
to giving formula the last three days, and not nursing and now is very
engorged, because she felt it was silly to get the baby fussy by
breastfeeding and that "after all, it's not like formula is bad for him or
anything....I mean it's been scientifically made to be just right for babies
any way, right?" Needless to say, we talked for an hour and a half and she
wants to meet with me tomorrow to discuss further her building up her milk
supply and learning about pumping or doing formula when she returns to work
next week and breastfeeding when at home. Warmllly, Mary
