Lactnetters,

I agree with Catherine that many abberant tongue movements, such as
biting, are not related to allergy, but have a mechanical/structural
explanation.

However, I have had 2 clients this year that had sore nipples very
clearly related to a food intolerance. The mothers' sore nipples finally
cleared when the mother removed an identified offending food from her
diet (one case was only cow's milk, second case was several foods,
including cow's milk). Both babies also had congestion, facial rash, and
colic as well which cleared with the mothers' diet changes. I think
maybe the congestion caused them to suck improperly(difficulty
breathing?) and thus caused the sore nipples. Both moms did a challenge
for their diets and it was very clearly related. (In fact in the case of
the milk only mom, she over challenged with 3 lg glasses of milk all at
once (NOT recommended!!) and baby was severely congested and having
difficulty breathing within 8 hours.)
