This is the way "market research" often works in the US. An anonymous
company hires a market research firm to pay people with certain
characteristics to answer questions or attend a focus group. My family
has made a few dollars doing this over the years (once you get on a
research specialists' list, they tend to call you again) attending focus
groups on cable tv (we never ordered pay per view movies, and they
wanted to know why), maternity jeans (what styles would pregnant women
like), taste-testing beverages, and commenting on different supermarket
layouts. It's interesting, and they give you an envelope with cash in it
at the end of the hour or two. Even if they send you away (they
overbook, just in case) you get an envelope!

You don't know who ordered the study until it's over, and some you never
know. My kids attended one about tobacco marketing to teens. It was by
Philip Morris, complying with federal laws against marketing to kids. We
felt icky about taking that money, because they could easily use the
data to just be more effective in marketing to children. I don't think
we did any more after that one.
