Sleeping through the night is a relative term so, we teach our mothers and
fathers that ³sleeping through the night² initially means getting a solid 4
hours in a row between one of the feedings, while compairing that to the
baby need to eat every 2 hours or so. With this idea planted early on, 5
hours seems like a real bonus.
I remember early on too, that when a parent would say their baby ³slept
through the night³, sometimes they meant 5 hours, when another listener
might be thinking she meant 8 hours; So then the listener expected 8 hours
was the norm. I have learned to ask, for clarity sake, BIG SMILE, and how
long was that?
