I am frustrated tonight. Thursday I saw a mother who was totally
breastfeeding on demand which happened to be every 4-5 hours. Needless to
say, I took the baby to Child Health to see the baby. The baby had only
gained 1 1/2 #, looked malnourished. I worked with mother for 2 hours. The
baby was breastfeeding but when ever anyone came in she gave the baby a
pacifier instead of breast. The ARNP that saw our baby is anitbreast. At
one point she is holding the baby's head on the mother's breast saying
breastfeed. She asked outrageous questions because she does not understand
breastfeed and physiology. Then she agreed to ask an MD from Shands about
feeding because I wanted to try breastfeeding every 2 hours. The MD because
the baby was 4 mos wanted formula after each breastfeeding every 2 1/2-3
hours. Well, the mother was scared and fed the baby every 2 hours
breastfeeding then the baby would only take 1 oz. of formula and gained 7.5
oz. The ARNP was happy about the weight gain until she realized it was
mostly from Breastmilk then she hollered at me and the mother to follow
doctor's orders. She told the mother to only feed breast every 4 hours then
3 oz of formula afterwards. Well, the baby came in tonight after the weekend
and lost .4 oz. I am frustrated. The ARNP that was there tonight agreed to
every 3 hours. The mother is getting so much mixed messages. She has alot
going on in her life and I don't think she feeds the baby as much as she
states. Please keep this baby is your prayers. She is coming back tomorrow.
If she doesn't gain any weight, they are going to do blood work on this
infant. Thanks for listening!!
