Joanne,
Thank you for responding so reasonably to the low-carb diet and
breastfeeding issue. As a recent convert, I am on a couple of email
lowcarb lists. I find the BF mothers are very concerned about losing
weight too quickly and are generally very reasonable about their weight
loss.

There are 3 of us now who teach for the Texas Dept of Health that are
following this plan. None of us are breastfeeding. But we are trying,
slowly, to change the misconceptions about low-carb eating plans.

The truth is, unless you pee on a stick, you never know when your body
is throwing off ketones naturally. Ketosis is not the same as
ketoacidosis. People with diabetes, hypoglycemia, and
hypercholesterolemia are doing very well on eating plans like Protein
Power, Atkins, Sugarbusters and The Zone. Blood pressures are going
down, cholesterol levels are decreasing, blood sugars are controlled
without meds and, oh by the way, weight is being lost.

The concern here should be for the speed at which mothers are losing
weight. I am more concerned with dumping toxins from fat stores into
her lactating body, than with the undocumented, unknown effects of a few
ketones in breastmilk. I advise women to monitor their carbs so that
weight loss remains within a respectable 1 pound per week.

If mom's milk supply decreased rapidly, I would look at other lifestyle
changes.
