I sometimes say to mothers to imagine they were about to take a
driving lesson, and they were very, very hungry. They would probably
not be able to concentrate on learning the new skill very well.

Human beings learn new skills best when they are happy, relaxed and
comfortable.

That's bottle feeding for a breastfed baby - a new skill.

Starving the baby into submission  (yes, this is *often* recommended
here) tends not to help learning.

At least with a driving lesson, the mother has other motivations. The
hungry, cross and disappointed baby doesn't even know the bottle will
lead to a full tummy.
