Hi eveveryone!
Ohio Lactation Consultant Assoc. got involved in the legislation
arena after a bf mother was asked to leave a Ruebens exhibit at
the Toledo Art Museum where she was discreetly nursing in a chair
in the room.  The reason given was that "no food was allowed in
the exhibit".  The next day there was a sit-in by bf mothers out-
side the museum and a pro-bf editorial in the local paper.
The reasoning was suddenly reversed by the museum.  But our organ-
ization contacted some legislators that we had talked to before
about other matters and one of them was willing to introduce a
bill to prohibit interference with breastfeeding in any public
or private lacation.  It was introduced under a section of laws
labeled "offenses against the family".  Unfortunately the legis-
lative session ended before the law was passed.  We hope to get
it done this session.  I understand that the legislation in New
York was passed under the "civil rights" umbrella.  I sat next
to the legislator that introduced the legislation in Florida in
Atlanta at breakfast last summer.  He said that it all came
about there when he was approached by a constituent who had been
asked to leave a mall because she was bf'ing.  So it all goes
to show that in a democracy one person can make a difference.
