Hi all,
Sometimes one has to celebrate small steps and ways we help our patients.
Here's my small story....A mom of a 14 d/old called with a request on how
to preserve her breastfeeding relationship with her newborn. She was being
treated with Doxycycline for an infection and was instructed to pump and
dump for 14 days. Naturally her concern for this young, just started
relationship was a top priority for her. She already had been pumping and
dumping for 4 days. After looking up whaterver info on Doxycycline (which
was not real definate on it being okay to breastfeed) I offered what in the
long run was the most obvious, but immediatiely overlooked suggestion....to
ask for another antibiotic! She called me several days later to tell me
that the originial doctor (not her primary) who ordered the med was against
changing the med, but with persistance she contacted her primary and was
switched to augmentin, and resumed successful breastfeeding. Somedays I am
a success and I wanted to share that!!
