I have a mom trying the pancreatic enzymes as suggested in Riordan's Book:
Breastfeeding and Human Lactation, third edition, pg.578. "Mothers of
infants with severe bloody stools due to allergic colitis were prescribed
Pancrease MT4, digestive enzymes normally used in the treastment of cystic
fibrosis for improving breakdown of foods in the gastrointestinal tract.
With more thorough food digestion, fewer intact proteins would be available
to enter the mothers milk. In these reports, colitis symmptoms in the
infants resolved in most of the treated dyads." It goes on to mention that
"occassionally the mom may have to interrupt breastfeeding , substituting a
hypoallergenic formula for a short or long period of time to relieve severe
symptoms before reintroducing breastfeeding".

This is moms 2nd baby, who tested positive for bloody stools as a newborn.
Her first child had same problem, that worsened to bloody stools before mom
eliminated all dairy/soy from her diet. As you all know, that is a really
hard diet and not much fun. So her OB agreed to give the pancreatic enzymes
a try. Mom is not drinking milk or eating ice cream, but has not removed
other dairy items from her diet.

My questions to you all are:
- have any of you had any experience with this?
- how long should it take to see results?
- how long would mom expect to be on the enzymes?
- how long should she try this strength before trying a stronger dose?
