Susan: Hi there from just up the road in Corvallis. Previously, I have
posted before about the use of herbs in newborns (even up to 6 mo). I have
serious concerns about their use in the youngest babies because they are a
food item. Teas contain powerful food constituents which have medicinal
impact. I strongly advocate for the use of homeopathy before herbs because
of this. Teas and other herbal preparations administered early run the same
risk of allergic reaction as do foods introduced too early. Besides the
allergic reaction issue, there is the problem of judging the strength of the
tea preparation, as well as the purity (pesticide, herbicides, and fungicide
use). Many folks in Oregon think they are getting "pure" or organic herbs
or berries, when in fact their plants have been "oversprayed" by neighbors
or the highway folks trying to wipe out our incidious weeds. I hope this
is clear and makes sense. This all not withstanding, if a mom chooses to
use teas, there are specific traditional teas that I encounter very
frequently: fennel, catnip, spearmint, peppermint, chamiomille, among
others.
Warmly,
