Further to the recent discussion on breastfeeding and protection against osteoporosis, here is another recent reference:

Boonyaratavej N, Suriyawongpaisal P, Takkinsatien A, et al. Physicial activity and risk factors for hip fractures in Thai women. Osteoporosis International 2001;12(3):244-248.

The protective factors included physical activity (past and current) and breastfeeding.  Among the risk factors were ahistory of fracture and current use of antihistamines or traditional medicines, ethnicity and alcohol use.  Worth looking at, for those of you with library accesss.
