If it is urgent that this mother have a mammogram, how can they justify
having her wait half a year?

Or, to put it another way, if it can wait six months, is it really
necessary?

I would question the people making this recommendation on exactly that
point.  What are they concerned about?  What are the risks of weaning, or
not?  If they are concerned about future malignancy, then stopping BF seems
ludicrous.

More likely I would seek an opinion from another source.
