Diane, I don't have anything new to add to the discussion of your diabetic
mom, but this whole discussion reminds me of something I've been wondering
about. I also had a diabetic client years ago who had plenty of milk with her
first baby and struggled with a supply with the second, finally weaned at 6
months. I didn't work with her closely, actually I think I just rented her a
breastpump, but I do remember asking her if her blood sugar was well-controlled and
she said it was. There may have been other, non-diabetes issues of which I
was unaware.

There is an article in this month's "Diabetes Forecast" magazine about a type
of breast lumps that can occur in diabetic women. It states that "diabetes
can cause dense fibrous lumps in the breasts. This condition is called
'sclerosing lymphocytic lobulitis' or 'diabetic mastopathy'" It says the lumps are
"harmless", though, of course, like all breast lumps, should be evaluated. The
infuriating thing is that nowhere does it say anything about whether or not
they affect breast function. As if the breasts don't have a function worth
talking about! So I wondered if this could cause decreased milk supply in some
diabetic women. Anyone have any experience with this? (I have a personal
interest, since my 24-year old daughter has diabetes, which is of course why I get
"Diabetes Forecast".)

In the same issue of the magazine, there's an article about caring for babies
and toddlers with diabetes and, again, nowhere is breastfeeding mentioned!

Time to write to the editor, I think. Miriam
