Dear Friends:
Jan Ellen Brown presents with her sad case report of the woman with
antepartum and recurrent postpartum mastitis that died of ductal CA.
Dr. Scott Dahlbeck, in "Differentiating Inflammatory Breast Cancer from
Acute Mastitis" (Amer Fam Phys, Nov 1, 1995, pp.929-934) says that the
"differential diagnosis of an inflamed breast in a lactating woman includes
acute mastitis, abscess, tuberculosis (uncommon) and rarely, cancer."
Cancer is not the first thing one should think of, nor is it the second
or third. But if the mastitis does not respond to the appropriate antibiotic
(which can be dicloxacillin), the mother should get a mammogram and
ultrasound.
     Warmly,
Nikki Lee RN, MSN, Mother of 2, IBCLC, CIMI, CCE, craniosacral therapy
