All the more reason, Mary, to have lactation training available thru a
college/university setting. College programs that have a clinical
component to them (nursing, medicine, the therapies, nutrition, etc.) have
formal contractual arrangements with a variety of clinical settings thru
which their students are able to gain the clinical experience they need to
present themselves as competent, albeit, beginning practicioners. Thru this
type of arrangement everyone involved (the student, the instructor, the
client, the clinical facility) are all protected legally. Those of you who
do not have a professional license may not know that my license is my
livelihood. If I were to lose my license I lose my ability to make a
living. When I mentor lactation students, if they themselves do not hold a
license to practice, they are practicing under my license. I want to be
very careful in such a situation that everything is scrupulously done.
This is why, I think, there is reluctance in some settings and areas for
experienced LCs to take on students.
Anyone in my area who is looking for lactation hours, feel free to contact
me.
