Hi Norma
There will be lots of opinions on this and they will differ. You will need
to decide where you stand. Some will say never, ever allow your name to
appear in any publication (or at any conference) where advertising or
promotion that is in breach of the Code appears. Others will say that it is
not a breach of the Code for you to provide accurate breastfeeding
information in places where infant feeding products are advertised (if it
was, most of the US hospital-based LCs would have to be disciplined). I am
of the opinion that it is not ethically problematic to provide accurate
breastfeeding information in places where infant feeding products are
advertised. I draw the line at providing information about breastfeeding to
companies for the purpose of promoting infant feeding products. This means
that I would happily write the column in the circumstances you describe
(although I might insist that no advertising for infant feeding products
appears on the same page, so as to avoid the impression of endorsement) but
I would not write breastfeeding information for Avent, Nestle or even a
retail outlet that sells infant feeding products (but I might need to think
about that last one a bit more).
Hope that helps.
Best
