Hi Jennifer,
One of the papers that formed part of the meta analysis for this paper
indeed found that there was a very strong correlation between total duration
and duration of exclusivity, so you're right (this was the only paper that
made any attempt to consider at exclusivity)....however, they also divided
the study into "breastfed" "not breastfed" for analysis (and if there's
anyone here whose good with stats who could explain to me the statistical
tool used to do this please email me privately) and also controlled for
maternal-child interaction something for which there is evidence that they
are not independent of feeding type....it's the latter assumption that
really makes me think that people really don't understand breastfeeding. It
would be interesting to look at the data and see if there was any link
between type of infant feeding and maternal care that was independent of
maternal IQ.
