Kathy writes about a baby with a cleft lip and palate, whose weight gains
to us seem quite adequate, mother is pumping and bottle feeding baby the
EBM. Kathy writes that the cleft is unilateral and 'not that big'.

Kathy I'd suggest putting the baby to the breast. Good latch, coupled with
breast compression may see a big increase in this wonderful mother's milk
supply.

At the ALCA conference... [you'll all be pleased when I've finally
exhausted it won't you? :-)] Nirmala Kesaree was one of the speakers. She
is the woman who described the cut-off syringe for the treatment of
inverted nipples. Anyway she suggests using this same technique to 'shape'
the nipple/areola for babies with clefts - she has apparently had a lot of
success with this - it elongates the nipple past the point in the babies
mouth where the cleft ends. Could be just the thing for this baby.

I discussed it with a colleague who assist many mohters with cleft babies.
She commented she always has greater success with those mothers who
naturally have long nipples.
