<<During my research, however, I never found any negative issues families
had to deal with while extending breastfeeding. My question is are
there any family issues mothers have to deal, such as jealousy between
siblings due to the amount of breastfeeding time? I wonder this
because I learned that toddlers whom breastfeed get more attached to
their mothers rather than objects like blankets or stuffed animals
(Bruce, 2000).>>
From personal experience, I never found any jealousy between my tandem
nursing kids. In fact I believe it helped reduce the jealousy on the part
of my eldest child because I was not taking that (breastfeeding) away too.
as for whether nursing toddlers are more attached to their mothers than
non-nursing toddlers...I would second what Naomi said, they are not more
attached, they are attached in the normal, biological manner befitting a
nursing, closely attached child should be. It is the children that are left
with propped bottles form 2-3 weeks of age and are never held while being
fed or otherwise, than are carried around in car seats and strollers every
day of their lives from birth that have deficiencies in their attachments.
Their is not much in the literature about negative issues with Tandem
nursing for a variety of reasons. One, not many women do it, we are a
sub-culture even within La Leche League. Two, many women who do it find that
their just isn't anything negative about between siblings. The worst I have
had happen is the occasional squabble over who wanted which side, and arms
legs getting in each others way! Thirdly, the only negative most mothers
give is the 'antsy' feelings they experience when nursing both
simultaneously.
I would encourage you to read "Mothering Your Nursing Toddler" and some of
the FAQ's on La Leche League's website. Both have a good section on Tandem
nursing. A number of professional Lactation texts also briefly describe
tandem nursing and what to expect and how to manage it.
