I, too, am concerned about the wording, especially in terms of Vitamin D.
If all that is said is that breastfed babies need added Vit. D it does sound
like it is deficient. The whole subject of whether extra Vit D is needed
has been discussed at some length previously on Lactnet. We had a
presentation at our affiliate recently by a doc telling of a sad case where
a totally breastfed baby did have a deficiency with tragic results. Certain
factors do increase risk. Among these are: not getting outside enough to
get it from sunlight, living in an area that is short on sunlight-either by
position on the globe or because pollution blocks the needed rays, and dark
skinned persons living in climates with less sunlight than their distant
ancestors. I understand that "palefaces" who live in far northern climes do
routinely add things like fish oil which compensates for the reduced Vit. D
available via sunlight.

What needs to be stated is that babies may need extra vitamin D. Formula
fed babies get it added to the formula while breastfed babies get it as a
supplement. It doesn't occur "naturally" in formula either!

As to the asthma question. What would be the difference in risk between a
baby getting vitamin(s) as a specific supplement to breastfeeding and
getting it as an ingredient in formula? Note-I'm not negating all the other
differences, just asking about whether the medium that delivers the vitamins
makes a difference in terms of later asthma.
