Hi. I am just curious about something and want to make sure I am not
missing anything. I have a mom with baby 5 weeks old. Gaining weight very
well. Mom's milk supply is very good. Stools and voids are plentiful also.
Mom is very attentive to baby's needs and baby sleeps with mom at night.

Anyway, mom is concerned because baby wants to nurse constantly between 11
pm and about 3 am. He does not seem satisfied even after being on each
breast for 30 minutes. This has been going on for about 4 days. He is
spitting up milk because his tummy is too full according to mom. Mom hears
plenty of swallowing and feels he is getting a lot of milk. He does fine
during the day and evening, going 3 hours between feeds. He is either
asleep or awake and content between feeds. Mom gave him formula and he took
2 ounces and decided to stop on his own, but was still not very content for
another hour and finally fell asleep.

I suggested that he was just needing extra comfort and sucking and to try
keeping him on one breast more so he doesn't get so full. Mom really thinks
he is still hungry during this episode. He did go through a noticeable
growth spurt a couple of weeks ago and mom does not feel this is a growth
spurt. Her family thinks she should try cereal. I gave her info about this
topic. She also said her step son who was formula fed had to be started on
cereal at 2 months because an 8 ounce bottle was not enough for him. She
also commented that dad has a very high metabolism.

Do you think this baby is really still hungry? If so, then why would he
only act this way a few hours and be fine the rest of the time? Mom worked
nights while she was pregnant and would eat a large meal at midnight. She
is wondering if her baby got used to getting a large "meal" in vitro, so
now he is more hungry at night. Any comments? Thank you for your time.
