Karyn-grace,

I've been told by several radiologists that they will not read the mammogram
of a lactating breast because it is inconclusive. I take this to mean "I
don't know how" because I know there are, out there, somewhere, radiologists
who will read lactating breast mammograms. They're just not here.

Anyway, I'm being told, consistently, that I need to wait 3 months after my
child is weaned to have a mammogram.

Of course, I'm also being told that the fact that I've been pregnant and/or
breastfeeding non-stop for the last 5+ years is a wonderful thing toward
minimizing my risk (my mother is a survivor), and that I should not wean or
put off a pregnancy just to have a mammogram.

My doctors have been good about following up with me when there's a concern
-- I had a galactocele after my first baby was born, which of course scared
the daylights out of me (a big, hard lump that only showed up when my breast
was really full, in the same place every time). My doctor offered to do an
ultrasound, needle aspiration, whatever I wanted to put my mind to rest.

Hope this helps,
Diana in NY
