I too, am very interested in this topic Roni. In my new job at a large base
hospital, this very topic is presenting me with some challenges as well. We
are all working hard to keep mothers and babies together but it is not
always successful. I know that skin to skin, thermal regulation, delaying
checking procedures and a successful first feed make a lot of difference in
the first few hours. After that we lose a lot of ground as large amounts of
formula are given to these babies to keep their blood sugars up and once
that happens, the breastfeeding becomes a token gesture until there is a
good milk supply up and running. And there the negative cycle begins as the
mother is usually discharged before this happens with her baby remaining in
the level 1 nursery.

What I want to look at is VOLUMES of formula and why it is given in the same
volume as IV fluids, e.g. 120mls per kilo per day. I would love some
information about that.
