I am in need of information, reference, even anecdote regarding thickening
of ebm/abm. The population in question is an NICU, so the babies are in
different stages of prematurity.

Our NICU has brought in an SLP (speech language pathologist) from another
city to write our feeding protocols. She is using rice cereal and
SimplyThick mixed with both EBM (expressed breastmilk) and ABM (artificial
baby milk),then bottling.

We have a perinatal dietitian who is concerned about this, as are the
IBCLCs. These are babies without a diagnosis of GER. They have been
observed choking when given supplementary bottles.

My literature search resulted in many articles relating thickening to GER.
No evidence exists from randomised controlled trials to support the
treatment's efficacy or safety. My question is, does anyone know anything
about thickening being used to prevent choking or aspiration? More
importantly, is there any science to which I can refer?

Please give me anything you have ASAP. I must attend a meeting with these
people tomorrow.

Many thanks.
Cate Edlebeck, RN,IBCLC
