I have another question. History first:

I called a mom today 3 wk postpartum who has been told today to stop
bf immediately and feed 3 oz formula each feed because baby not gaining wt x
3 days and is still not back to birth wt. Mom told me that the doctor (very
bf unfriendly, formula just as good type) told her that her breastmilk
didn't have enough calories and that she was to bottle feed first and then
breastfeed if she wanted to for comfort. She also said that at her WIC appt
today, the "nurse" observed the consistency and color of her milk before and
after the feed and said that it was watery and didn't look like she had hind
milk. She also told her that she didn't hear the baby swallowing very much.
This mom gave up bf her first baby at 3 weeks because of low supply but
chalked it up to stress from moving right after baby was born. With this
baby, she had horrible hamburger nipples - I corrected a minor position
problem, did saline soaks and lansinoh and they cleared up fairly quickly.
This baby had a 10 % wt loss that was slowly improving, plenty of wet and bm
diapers. Appears to have stalled wt wise now.

My question: Is there such a thing as low cal breastmilk? or no hind milk?
Everything I see points to a supply problem. We have no facilities for
testing milk (not that ped would even consider ordering such a test,
formula being so much easier)

                        Thanks again, Debbie Codding
