>>My initial thoughts were that the first scale I mentioned would be a
good choice to start with so that I could at least track weight during
visits. Or do most of you send moms and babies to the pedi for a weight
check??<<

Wendy,
I do all weights myself-- too hard to send moms back and forth to the ped!
While I have shared some of your concerns about pre- and post- feed weights,
I also want to share with you a recent case. Mom had taken the breastfeeding
class and had also read extensively. I got a call day 3 p.p. from her wanting
to rent a breast pump--- she stated to me that, according to her reading, her
nipples were "way too big" and her baby's mouth "way too small" to
breastfeed. It took me quite a while to convince her to come in for a
consult, as she was convinced that she had diagnosed herself correctly. Well,
when I finally saw her, there was nothing wrong with her nipples or baby's
mouth--- she was referring to the areola, of which hers was large, and one
book which told her that she must get all of it into baby's mouth! <g> (I
know you've all seen this one before!) I got baby on for a great feed, but
after 3 days of insufficient feeds, dad was *very* skeptical and untrusting,
and still wanted measurements. I finally convinced him by making them rent
the scale for a day so that he could "see" what baby was taking in. Well, he
hustled that scale back to me the very next day as the test weights showed
excellent intake, as well as the diaper output. He was very stubborn, and
had I not had that scale to offer him, I don't know that he would have "let"
his wife go home "just" breastfeeding. It is worth it, and you will find the
benefits, too. You don't have to use it all the time if you don't want to,
but there will be times like this that you will be so glad you have it!
