Regarding Tammy's question about breastfeeding and exercise, there should be
no problem exercising while breastfeeding. Though it's much easier to nurse
before the workout (since the breasts aren't as heavy) it would certainly be
ok to workout right after a class. As a fitness instructor, I have nursed
my three babies while teaching aerobic dancing and running 10k's with no
problems whatsoever. While at an international aqua-aerobics conference,
one of the most popular presenters taught a vigorous workout and then
proceeded to sit by the pool and nurse her 3 week old baby...what a
beautiful sight. It was in Orlando on a hot, humid day so she may have
tasted a bit salty, but the baby didn't seem to mind. I have heard some say
that the exercise causes lactic acid to build up and change the taste of the
milk, but I haven't seen that in the 20 years I've been teaching aerobics.
I have many moms in my fitness classes who exercise and then get the babies
from the nursery and put them to breast, (yes sometimes even before a
shower!) So just tell the moms to listen to their bodies, drink lots of
water and wear a good support bra. Kym Dunton, RN, BA, IBCLC, ACE & AEA
