Has anyone been following the latest story line? Deanna's mother (I've been
wanting to bop the old bat since I "met" her) told her yesterday that the
reason Meredith was crying so much was because she was breastfeeding and the
baby wasn't getting enough. Deanna says that her doctor thinks they are
doing fine. Her mom replies, "You should be bottle feeding. I don't care
what the "modern thing to do" is -- they get more nourishment from formula.
If her tummer were full, she'd sleep better." Deanna says, "Mom, Meredith is
health. She just has a little colic, that's all." Mom says, "Then its
something else you are doing wrong!"

Today: Mom goes on, "Colic is just gas, Deanna. You should let her sleep on
her tummy." Deanna: "Mom, that's dangerous. She's supposed to lie on her
back on a smooth, firm surface." Mom: "Then she's not sleeping because she
doesn't have enough blankets." Deanna: "If you put a lot of blankets on
babies, they get overheated and that's dangerous too." Mom: "So you're
following all the latest rules." Deanna: "No -- I'm following all the
latest research."

Isn't it great? Evidence based practice makes it into the comics!

But what really struck me is that I imagine there are lots of moms/grandmas
out there that are trying to undermine what their kids are doing -- are
trying to get them to do it the "old" way because the "modern" way doesn't
seem to be right to them.

Too bad Deanna doesn't know about slings (though Elly had one for April), and
the 5 S's.
