Concerning the moms who were having trouble with plugged ducts and blisters.
My daughter was 15 months old and nursing A LOT (very little solids) I began
having blocked ducts and one mastitis. I finally mastered the following
technique when I felt a blocked duct coming: while putting firm pressure on
engorged parts of my breast (cupping one hand around and pressing with my
fingers flat), I looked at the nipple and found whitish "blisters" at the
outlet of the blocked ducts. Continuing the pressure I rubbed gently with a
clean cotton diaper until the ducts opened and milk came gushing out. Then I
hand expressed milk into the diaper until I felt more comfortable. My
daughter could have done without significant solid foods until she was 19
months old and I became pregnant with her brother. (Speaking of doctor's
advice to reduce to 3 nursings a day at 1 year!!!)
Sincerely, Margy Porter, B.S., mom, midwife and LC wannabe
