Dear JP,
I would be extremely cautious about advising a mother to use Depo to
increase her milk. While some mothers experience an increase as a happy side
effect of that particular method of birth control, others experience quite
significant and often devastating (due to the rather permanent nature--3 months
long) drops in milk supply. And this problem is not limited to mothers who
receive the shot shortly after birth. I was once contacted by a mother who had
had premature twins. The twins were born 3 months early, were now 4 months old
(1 month corrected), and mom had finally gotten them both to the point where
they were completely breastfeeding with no supplement. At 4 months postpartum,
she got a Depo shot. Within 48 hours, her breasts were back to prepregnancy
size and she didn't have a drop of milk. At this point in time, there doesn't
seem to be any way to look at a mother and say whether or not Depo will
decrease her supply.
