I find this an interesting thread because I just had the opposite situation
yesterday. I had a visit from a mother whose breastfed baby's weight gain
has slowed down (baby 7 months old!!) and the doctor expressed concern to
this mother because her weight had dipped on the growth charts. So Mom
comes to see me, tells me that her doctor is concerned and wants to keep an
eye on weight gain. Baby looks wonderful, great color, very alert,
developmentally on target, breastfeeds like a champ, gets good number of wet
and poopy diapers, and has started solids, which she loves!!! Height and
weight are at the 5th %, down from the 25th 3 months ago- but
height/weight are at the 50th%! After some reassurance, I convinced Mom
that this baby is growing wonderfully, and that I saw no cause for concern
with her weight! Also told mom about how a breastfed baby grows and that
she would see a slower weight gain. Thankfully mom's response to me was "I
was wondering what you would think about this, and I am glad for the
reassurance". Ahhhhh! How nice!

But, banging my head against the wall because how long before this doctor
recommends formula to "increase weight gain" on a baby who obviously
doesn't need it! Interpreted incorrectly, those growth charts can be
dangerous!
