I don't have scientific knowledge of this, but I suspect that it isn't the
ketones or the diet itself -- but on that type of a diet, within a week,
people drop their caloric intake drastically because the diet itself blunts
the appetite and cravings.  I suspect if she really looks at her caloric
intake and increases it (rather than just increasing carbs) she'll do fine.
The other option is to just limit her intake of refined sugars and starches
-- and make sure she's eating plenty of fruits & veggies.  She won't lose as
quickly, but she won't inadvertently decrease her caloric intake so
drastically either.
