Dear all:

I often find that there is an overdiagnosis of oversupply. Mothers will come into my groups
having been "diagnosed" with oversupply, put on block feedings and their babies are
actually taking small amounts from each breast. In these cases, they may also have a fast
flow, but it all comes out at once. Tamping down the supply doesn't help and sometimes
even hinders the situation because the baby is often choking, but still never getting enough.

With oversupply that has been verified, I do find that block feedings and thorough, but
infrequent pumping does work to tamp down the supply. I have not yet ever had the
frequent short pumping work for these situations. So there must be something quite
different in either our observations or our diagnoses.

Best, Susan Burger
