Fiona, I'm currently doing historical research on innovations in bottle/teat
designs and the marketing claims made for them across 160 years. Marketing
is a marvellous thing! While I haven't got my hands on the Breastflow
bottle, it is one of several recent designs with features similar to a
bottle that briefly appeared in around 1861. (That year is not a typo.) I
suspect that leakage would have led to its short existence. Modern
materials should make this design less prone to leading - but this doesn't
appears to be the case as the online reviews of this brand consistently
mention leaking, a lot of leaking. Even the good reviews by consumers
mention this, including the difficulty of carrying the bottle in a bag. Some
reviewers do confirm, as a positive, that it is slower than other devices
tried.
Like many designs of widely different types over the decades, the claim is
made that it prevents colic, something I'm always skeptical of as it's so
common in marketing hype. (For a start, definitions of "colic" vary, making
comparision difficult, and in bottle marketing the term is often
interchangeable with gassiness.) At breast, the baby will draw some of the
breast tissue into a "teat" to elongate the nipple, but - while the wide
"breast" part seems to encourage the baby to flange her/his mouth on it -
the photos and video show no signs that the baby can draw the "breast" into
her/his mouth in a similar way. I have had no opportunity to compare it
with other bottle nipples, and there are certainly worse ones out there.
What is the age of this baby, Fiona? Would other ways of delivering the
expressed breastmilk or substitute be more appropriate than using a bottle?
