Who has done this? If we increase bf initiation rates in hospitals then we
should not have to purchase as much formula. Could anyone out there who has
achieved baby friendly status - let us know how you worked through the free
formula issue or maybe it was never an issue.
What is the creative approach here. Why are we marketing for formula
companies. Would formula costs be significant enough that we would feel the
cost? My hospital is in a budget crunch - saving here - cutting there - I
am determined to find a way to work through this. Then all hospital should
know they can get out of the bonds of the formula providers. Even if they
gave it to us free - no strings attached - no diaper bags - etc.etc. they
would still be making out. Every baby who started on a particular f would
probably continue on that once at home.
I am working on the baby friendly assess. and finding some
$$$$resistance$$$$. There is just an awful lot of marketing ploys that go
on with the f companies and the drug companies.
I suggested charging the patient for formula - that bites into capitation -
but if we decrease intervention we are decreasing cost of services for our
moms and babies. This should not be difficult. Why is it? I feel a little
lame right now. I emailed Coach Smith, my great mentor, please open this
for discussion if you can , help us all.
"The best way to ensure the future is to create it." Heard that at a Rural
Pa health conference. Sorry but don't know who spoke it in the beginning.
BTW - putting together everyones thoughts on documentation and will post
next week. TIA -Sue
