Just wondering if anyone has come across this condition, how it was
diagnosed and whether it was treated. From my studies I have gleaned that
it occurs from 6 wks to 3 mths pp, starts with hyperthyroidism then has a
hypothyroid phase before, usually full recovery. Diagnosis, if made at all,
is usually during the hypothyroid phase.
The reason I ask is because I think a woman I am assisting may have it. She
came to me when baby was 3+ wks - had been totally stuffed up with
breastfeeding m'ment from the beginning. When I saw her she was offering
the breast (with nipple shield, baby had NEVER been to the breast without)
4hrly then giving bottles after each feed (EBM plus 300ml ABM in 24 hrs).
Baby wasn't even attaching to the shield, just bobbing backwards and
forwards on the teat and was beginning to refuse. To cut a long story
short the baby fed beautifully at the breast (directly), but I anticipated
low supply (by at least 300 ml/day), so suggested swapping sides,
compression, pumping, SNS with evening feed, fenugreek.
Next afternoon she rang with a very typical lactose-overload scenario
(hadn't even started the fenugreek, no comps given!). Obviously no poor
supply.
Her house is immaculate (yeah, OK just cos I can't manage it, even with all
the children at school...).
yesterday she rang asking if it's safe to take Valerian - can't sleep,
can't stop thinking. Discussed postnatal depression - she doesn't think she
has got it.
What do you think?
Denise

PS That info about cholesterol was just brilliant - thanks all; must admit
my first reaction was 'what a load of ...'
