Certified Lactation Educator - mine is from The Lactation Institute and
Pacific Oaks College, California. We sign a statement at the end that we
will NOT present ourselves as Lactation Consultants or provide breastfeeding
counselling. As LLL's we must clearly identify that we are answering as an
LLL, not from the position of being a CLE.

Suggested applications: breast pump rental station, WIC, family counselors,
breastfeeding classes,nutritionists.

BASIC LACTATION
PART A: PUBLIC HEALTH, SOCIAL & NUTRITIONAL ISSUES (2 days).
Advantages, historical and public health ramifications of breastfeeding.
Overcoming guilt and other social obstacles.
The routine for successful breastfeeding.
Employed mothers.
Fussy babies and issues for older babies.
Maternal nutrition, including weight loss, vegetarian and other diets.
Specifically designed for those working with breastfeeding mothers including
WIC dietitians, M.D.'s. R.N.'s, child care givers.
Teaching and peer counseling techniques.
PART A is specifically designed for marriage and family counselors, child
care workers, health care professionals and WIC center personnel as well as
those interested in a career in assisting women with breastfeeding.

BASIC LACTATION
PART B: TECHNIQUES - Provides technical details for helping women with
breastfeeding (3 days).
Great Beginnings: Identify milk insufficiency syndrome, how to find and
solve problems early.
Basic Breastfeeding Techniques: Manual expression of breastmilk, latch-on
and positioning.
Evaluating proper sucking behavior and helping babies who refuse to latch to
the breast.
Solving sore nipples, engorgement, inverted nipples.
Breastfeeding devices that really help.
Special breastfeeding situations: illness, hospitalization, drugs, induced
lactation and relactation, jaundice, failure to thrive, multiples.
Small class size enables dialog with instructors. There is ample opportunity
to discuss problems you have encountered when working with breastfeeding
mothers.

Lactation Educator (LE) Credit is awarded after the completion of clinical
observation, additional reading, observation and writing assignments. These
assignments take approximately 3 months.

Unfortunately all of this has never gotten me a job :-(

Michelle Bentley, CLE
