It is precisely for this reason that I believe obtaining written permission to send reports and have discussions with the mother's other health care providers is so important.  Collaboration is such an vital part of how we practice. I have seen several situations similar to Liane's over the years after they have been hospitalized. After numerous lab tests they were all found to be severely underfed. I cannot imagine how difficult it must be to try to help a mother in this situation via e-mail especially without any input from others who are seeing the baby. Yikes!
