"It wasn't until the day one of my colleagues started yelling at me 'You
think it's all so easy, well it's NOT, and I breastfed for a MONTH and never
had more than an ounce of milk, and it was REALLY HARD...' and then started
to cry, that I came to my current realization. What made it all the more
convincing was that the baby she breastfed is now a man of 40, she is
retired, and recalling her experience can still reduce her to a quivering
mass."

One of my most compelling initiatives for making an impact on assisting
women to breastfeed came about when I was pregnant with my daughter who's now
7 years old. I was teaching clinical at a nursing school, so I was on an
adult med/surg unit whereby I met elderly women routinely who were
disoriented to date, time, and place, but, did they ever recall their birth
experiences when they touched my expanding belly! I heard many stories with
tears about their efforts with breastfeeding. It was then that I learned the
immense importance of birthing and breastfeeding to the lives of women.
Sincerely,
