In a message dated 97-12-03 23:06:16 EST, you write:

<< Treatment for acid reflux or GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) can
include change in lifestyle, medication or both. Neither requires
 discontinuation of breast feeding.

 I'd recommend:

 1) avoiding all aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
(NSAIDS),citrus juices, coffee, alcohol, vit C, iron pills, anti oxidants,
and avoid meals within three hours of sleep.

All right. True confession time. For the last almost 9 months, I've been on
the Dr. Atkins "drive the American Heart Association Crazy" diet (high
protein, low carbohydrates). Now before anyone flames me for being on a "fad"
diet (Tim's health teacher's definition), let me tell you that (a) my blood
pressure is down, (b) my cholesterol is down, (c) my triglycerides went from
277 to 96, (d) my HDL - LDL ration improved dramatically, (e) my energy level
skyrocketed, and (f) -- I've experienced not one whit of GER! It was so bad
prior to starting this way of eating that I thought I had a hiatal hernia. I
was taking so many Tums my calcium levels were above normal. I'd get up in
the middle of the night and pad down to the kitchen to get a hit of
Maalox...miserable! yes, I still drink coffee.(It has no calories and no
carbohydrates). I take the occasional NSAIDs for whatever, and even (gasp)
have an occasional glass of wine. But NO heartburn. And everyone else I've
talked to who has been on this lifestyle eating (I prefer to refer to it as
that rather than a "diet") has told me exactly the same thing.

I can't explain what it is or why -- I know this happened even before I lost
any weight. However, I'm convinced some people cannot tolerate lots of
carbohydrates, particularly the complex (starches, grains) carbs. I do eat
fruits & veggies, BTW, though stay away from fruits that are high in carbs.

I would wonder if switching her diet around -- that is, eating more carbs in
the morning at breakfast, and decreasing the amounts at dinner would help....

Remember, no flames!!
