I am due to see a 5 week old baby tomorrow who suffered birth asphyxia and
has extensive neurological impairment. I first met this baby at 2 weeks of
age and assisted with the first breastfeed which was successful.

His motor development has deteriorated and he is a difficult feeder.
He has some of his feeds via a haberman feeder and eventually he will be
tube fed I'm sure. Meanwhile, his mother wants to continue breastfeeding as
long as possible.

How is the Haberman working? I always wonder what the best feeding assistive
device is for these babes. If the baby is going to end up with a Gtube, can
there still be nursing while the Gtube is "feeding" the baby? Is the baby
high tone, low tone, changing tone, disorganized in general? Depending on the
tone, positioning can be used to assist in normalizing it as much as possible.
Does the baby see a really good OT and/or SLT? It can be really helpful to
attend a visit with the OT/SLT and brainstorm together in the same room.

Peace,
Judy
