I have just returned from the conference in Altoona, Pa. The speakers were our
very own, Jack Newman, Linda Smith, Diane Wiessinger, Kay Hoover and Chris
Mulford. It was wonderful, the conference was so well run, so well organized
and it was so interesting to see the faces that go with the names on lactnet.
After driving for 6 hours to get home, a friend stopped by with her daughter
and premie grandaughter. The baby was born at 35 weeks and was just discharged
home at 5 pounds. Naturally, I inquired if she was breastfeeding, both parents
said mom had no milk and baby would not nurse. I showed the parents the new
video I just bought at the conference, *Delivery Self Attachment.* Sooooo, we
went into a quiet room, I showed mom how to express some milk, and the baby
latched on. She had difficulty keeping the breast in her mouth, but after
about 15 minutes was already doing well. I showed her how to use breast
compression, gave them my usual talk on breastfeeding and sent her on her way,
with a feeding cup.
*Accidents don't happen* continues to be my motto.
I would like to officially thank all those responsible for the conference,
they all did an excellent job. Especially to Karen Foard and Karen Nelson, for
putting together such a successful conference. It was definately worth the 6
hour drive.
