Dear Lactnet Friends:

Yesterday I saw a mother who had her first baby in Canada, and had her
second baby in the US a few weeks ago.

Baby-led feeding did the trick. This baby had NEVER latched on herself. Even
the first breastfeed was forced by a staff person taking the breast in one
hand, and the baby in the other, and putting part N into part M, (nipple
into mouth). The mother and baby have been fighting for weeks. The mother
has very sore nipples.

What made me very sad (aside from the absurdity of forcing a natural
process) was the mother's amazement to hospital practice in the US. "They
don't have nurseries in Toronto" she said. "They kept taking my baby away
from me. What for? In Toronto (a major city in Canada), they did everything
in the room: the bath, the physical exam, everything." "A nurse woke me up
in the middle of the night, all upset, asking where was my baby? I said,
'Right here in bed with me' and the nurse yelled at me for that."

Sigh.

warmly,
