I've been learning a lot from this thread, and wanted to add a few ideas.

I began with my first baby following ecological, long term breastfeeding.
Over time with input from less "attachment" oriented friends, plus my own
difficult adjustment to motherhood, I moved into a less attached style,
which I would have continued with my second, except that I began attending
LLL meetings, and started understanding how to look at things from the
baby's point of view.

A mother's own ideas about breastfeeding being primarily about nutrition
(and so may need to be sacrificed so she can nurture her children), or
being "best" rather than "normal" may influence what she does when she
feels pulled in several directions. Also, if she was overwhelmed by a
difficult first year with her first baby, she may be picturing that it
will be as difficult with her second child, except now she has two
children to care for.

And while our biology supports us nurturing our babies, we also are a
species that must have social input to learn the art of mothering. There
are many, many cultural forces that do not support successful nurturing
and breastfeeding of our babies.
