Parenting and Johnson & Johnson produce a 36 pg booklet called
"Pregnancy Basics," which has this advice under breastfeeding:

"The longer you nurse, the more your baby will benefit. Some doctors
think that babies should nurse for at least 12 months. But that isn't
always possible...[snip]...Once you decide to stop, give your baby one
bottle every day...Your baby might not like the bottle at first, and he
may cry when you offer it to him. Keep trying to give him a bottle each
day."

I can just see this poor little baby saying, "Stop! This stuff hurts my
stomach and tastes nasty, I need the breast!" and the mom, following
instructions, continually trying to give him the formula even when he
cries. And then of course there's that statement about "some doctors,"
which is written to cast doubt on the concept of breastfeeding for 12
months. And the obligatory, "But that isn't always possible..." which
encourages moms to quit.

In another place in the booklet is the statement, "If pain medicine
helps you to have a safe delivery, then that's what matters most." A
woman may choose to use drugs for pain, but to promote them as making
deliveries safer is another matter.

Just my (annoyed) observations on this booklet, which our WIC office
receives by the hundred for distribution. California's WIC program is
working to meet the standards of Baby Friendly to create a safe haven
for breastfeeding in our clinics so even though there are no formula
adverts in this booklet, it causes concern.
