Well, having read that latest on excerpthttp://
www.thenewbasics.com/highlights.shtml, I can tell you that the CDC will
have a thing or two to say about his comments on iron-fortified cereals.
The actual newest research that Kay Dewey presented at the American Academy
of Breastfeeding Medicine suggests that infants probably evolved in an
environment where they were fed prechewed bits of meat which is how they
got their iron and zinc, but there are many reasons to be vegetarian these
days and so we're supposed to ignore the fact that the first nutrients that
are needed are iron for brain development and zinc for immunity?

And then, perhaps we should get Lawrence Gartner to review his rather
cavalier section on jaundice, then I'm going to make sure my husband, a
clinical child psychologist reads his section on his CURE for ADD (which
doesn't really exist). Then, I'm going to have my colleagues in nutrition
who are experts on osteoporosis read his pronouncements on calcium.

The good thing is that many many of his clients have seen my fellow
lactation consultants despite the fact that he thinks we're all weirdos who
medicalize breastfeeding, use that silly bag that messes up breastfeeding,
that our latch on techniques are awkward, and we use that backward
technique of clipping frenulums that doesn't really fix breastfeeding
problems anyway.

Never mind that I know one client (one of my most difficult actually) who
fired him when he wouldn't suggest a specialist to clip a frenulum that was
keeping their baby from latching at all - who then went on to breastfeed
beautifully after they fired two more pediatricians until they found one
who would clip a frenulum and my best-documented SNS case was a woman who
was his client. We actually have a week by week record of when she
followed his advice and her baby lost weight and when she followed my
advice her baby gained weight. Took three months and she was convinced and
her baby was back on the breast entirely - but Dear Dr. Cohen won't admit
that he caused that baby to suffer needlessly because he didn't believe in
pumping when its not going well.

In the end, it has dawned on me that I see LOTS of his clients because they
certainly don't get the help they need from him.

Susan Burger, MHS, PhD, IBCLC (oooooooohh - that theory based credential
which has nothing to offer other than hand-holding - heaven forbid that a
woman be weak enough to need a little comfort - and useless devices).
Sigh
